Abstract

Synthetic textile filaments, particularly those of synthetic linear polyamides, are stretched in apparatus comprising a feed roll and a draw roll of larger diameter fixed on a common shaft, the rolls having a hard chrome wearing-surface and being provided with auxiliary separator rolls, and a non-rotatable snubbing pin, positioned so that the filaments pass in succession a plurality of times in each case round the feed roll with its auxiliary separator roll, the snubbing pin, and the draw roll with its separator roll. The snubbing pin ensures localization of the draw point, and the arrangement of the feed roll and draw roll on the same shaft avoids irregularities in the drawing or stretching such as occur when the rolls are on separate shafts and connected by gear or chain drive. The arrangement of the feed and draw rolls on the same shaft permits the driving of a large number of doubleended combined feed and draw rolls without gears, e.g. by an endless belt. The feed and draw rolls may be secured to the shaft by set-screws and may be changed to alter the draw ratio. The rolls may be of chrome-plated mild steel. As shown in Fig. 1, the yarn G passes <PICT:0655928/IV (a)/1> several times round feed and separator rolls A, D, and then a few times round the snubbing pin F. The yarn then passes to the draw roll B and is looped round this roll and the separator roll E several times, e.g. three times, finally emerging through guide H. The shaft rotates 700 times per minute and the diameter of roll B is 3 1/2 times that of roll A. The portion J of the shaft may be used when required to take up waste.
