Abstract
The apparatus for drawing artificial filaments of the parent Specification which comprises a feed roll and a draw roll of larger diameter fixed on a common shaft, said rolls being provided with auxiliary separator rolls, and a nonrotatable snubbing pin, positioned so that the filaments pass in succession a plurality of times round the feed roll with its auxiliary separator roll, the snubbing pin, and the draw roll with its separator roll) is modified in that, of the two said auxiliary separator rolls, at least the auxiliary separator roll for the feed roll is replaced by a non-rotatable pin. The auxiliary separator roll for the draw roll may also be replaced by a non-rotatable pin. The nonrotatable pin for the feed roll may also be employed as a separator for the draw roll, and in this case the pin is cylindrical in shape and its surface is provided with spaced circumferential grooves for accommodating filaments wrapped around it. The non-rotatable pin or pins is or are preferably parallel to the axes of the feed and draw rolls. The pin(s) may be of "Faradex" (a refractory consisting mainly of titanium dioxide) or of "Sintox" (a sintered aluminium oxide). Wraps are taken round the pin(s) so that each wrap has an arc of contact of about 180 degrees. Preferably one non-rotatable pin of "Sintox" is used as a separator for both feed and draw rolls, the pin being provided with V- or U-shaped grooves. In an example, a single separator pin of "Sintox" of 0.25 inch diameter and 2 inches length is provided and has three spaced circumferential grooves with U-shaped bottoms for accommodating wraps from the feed roll, the spacing between them being 0.125 inch, and one similar groove for accommodating one wrap from the draw roll and positioned 0.5 inch away from the nearest of the feed roll grooves. The modification of the parent invention reduces variations in the draw ratio due to slippage of the filaments on the feed roll.
