Abstract

543,466. Stretching synthetic filaments. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. July 15, 1940, No. 11711. Convention date, July 14, 1939. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] [Also in Group IV] Synthetic yarns and filaments, e.g. of a synthetic linear polyamide, which are capable of being elongated at least 150 per cent. of their original length are permanently and uniformly elongated by cold drawing or stretching the yarn or filament in contact with the surface of a non - rotatable snubbing pin around which the yarn or filament is wrapped at least one complete turn and on which the draw point is located while restricting the movement of the draw point on the surface so as to produce a uniformly drawn yarn or filament; the movement of the draw point is preferably restricted to a zone not greater than 2 inch along the path of travel of the yarn or filament. As shown the yarn is fed by a roller 21 to a drawing roller 27 the yarn being led around the rollers and separating rollers 23, 25 several times to prevent slipping of the yarn, the shifting of the draw point being prevented by and localised on the non-rotatable snubbing pin 24 about which the yarn is passed one or several turns so that the tension developed in the yarn at the pin will preferably be at least half of the tension required in the drawing operation; the drawing zone may be given a sustained shift by giving the pin a rectilinear circular or elliprical motion, the speed of the pin not exceeding 2 per cent. of the linear speed of the undrawn yarn. The pin is preferably made of agate but other smooth materials or alloys may be used and the diameter should not greatly exceed 2 inch. The rollers 21, 27 may be of the same diameter driven at different speeds or they may be of different diameter to give the different peripheral speeds necessary to give the proper drawing rates and the rollers may be arranged on the same shaft. Specifications 461,236 and 461,237, [both in Group IV] and U.S.A. Specification 2,071,250 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of tension devices e.g. convex sheets or plates, in place of the snubbing pins and the application to staple length filaments and yarns. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
