Abstract

655,776. Variable-speed gearing. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 6, 1948, No. 20804. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1947. '[Class 80(ii)] A number of frusto-conical rollers 31 rotatably mounted in a fixed casing 13 and thrust into contact with a driven roller 58 by springs 44 acting through spherical seatings 41 have their individual contact pressures equalized during drive by the opposing axial thrust on each roller due to a helical gear connection 22, 36 between it and a driving shaft 21, each opposing thrust being proportional to the torque transmitted by the corresponding roller. The roller 58, which is slightly crowned, is connected to a driven shaft 51 by splines 61, 62 having sufficient play to allow the roller 58 to centralize itself between the rollers 31. A lever 67 acts through a thrust bearing 64 on the roller 58 to slide it axially for ratio changing. The springs 44 may be replaced by a single spring or by other resilient means, and the roller 58 may be replaced by a ring encircling the rollers 31. The shafts 21, 51 may be the driven and driving shafts respectively.
