Abstract

436,363. Variable-speed friction gearing. CLOUDSLEY, J. L., 5, Chancery Lane, London. Jan. 10, 1934, No. 1002. Divided out of 431,199. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction gear of the kind in which precessional rollers 10, 11 are rockably mounted between coaxial driving and driven toricdiscs 1, 9 and 12, resilient axial pressure-means, such as Belleville washers 21, are arranged on the input side of the input disc 1, between an adjusting-nut 30 and a torque-responsive end-loading ring 24, through which latter the whole of the input torque passes to the disc 1. During normal operation, the washers 21 are never completely compressed, and their initial compression is determined by tightening a light spring- washer 21x, behind the rear disc 9. The front and rear discs 1, 9 are both rockably mounted on an intermediate shaft 3, as described in Specification 431,199. The torquering 24 is connected by loose dogs 23 with a cup 22 on the driving shaft 35, and may, or may not be integral with the inner or outer race of the thrust-bearing 32, which may have radial races. The intermediate shaft 3 may, as shown, be journalled in the cup 22, in which case the thrust-bearing floats, or it may be journalled only by the thrust-bearing. A torsionallyresilient coupling may be provided at the output end, and also, if desired at, the input end of the gear. Specifications 391,149, 392,589, and 405,453 also are referred to.
