655,361. Making paper bags. HOLTERMAN, G. A. Dec. 29, 1947, No. 34367. Convention date, Jan. 10. [Class 94(ii)] [Also in Group VIII] In the manufacture of bags from paper which is paraffined over at least one of its surfaces, an adhesive being provided between the paraffined contacting surfaces of a transverse and overlapping bottom fold of the bag, and the fold being sealed by means of heat and pressure, the bags, with the bottom fold supplied with adhesive and lying at the outside, are separately supplied on a moving surface and are then inserted between two co-operating moving surfaces, one of which is provided with one or more heating elements, in such a manner that either fold will be pressed against a heating element. As shown, a bag is made from a blank cut from a paper strip 14, Fig. 3, paraffined on one side except along the margin 15. The sides of the blank are folded and edge 15 is secured by paste or similar adhesive to the non- paraffined outside of the blank. The paraffined bottom flap 13 is now folded over on to the non-paraffined bottom edge 13<SP>1</SP> of the folded sides, which has been covered with paste, and the folded blank is fed by a cylinder 9, Fig. 2, between a rotating cylinder 1 and an endless pressure belt 7 so that the edges 13, 13<SP>1</SP> register with and are pressed against an electrical heating element 3 in the surface of the cylinder 1, whereby the paraffin on edge 13 is melted away and the edges 13, 13<SP>1</SP> secured together by the paste. The finished bag is carried from cylinder 1 by a cylinder 10 to a collecting table 11.
