Abstract

654,229. Agricultural implements. WHARTON & OLDING. Ltd., W., and WHARTON, W. Feb. 10. 1948, 12173/49. Divided out of 654,227. [Class 6(i)] A manually-guided motor-cultivator comprises motor-driven rotary tines 30, 31 extending approximately longitudinally of the machine and adapted to be pushed into the ground, and the machine is supported on wheels 28 which are driven intermittently from the motor 9 through a cam 12 and ratchet clutches 17. The tines are driven continuously by the motor in opposite directions and the spindle 10 of one tine 30 is extended rearwardly to carry a cam 12 which drives a cam-shaft 13 on a transverse shaft 5. The shaft is mounted between the side frame-members 2, 3 and is secured to levers 22 connected by links 25, 27, to free-wheel ratchet clutches 17 on the axles of the wheels 28 which are mounted on bell-crank levers 16. If desired, the wheels 2 may be mounted (dotted positions) on the forward ends of these levers 16 and are then idle.
