Abstract

653,535. Stuffing box substitutes. WADE ENGINERING, Ltd. March 8, 1948, No. 7163. [Class 122(v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] in an oil seal device be tween a casing 2 and a shaft 3. which comprises a labyrinth seal formed by two elements 5, 6 hav ing co-operating ribs anc grooves concentric with the shaft 3, the outer ele ment 5 being fast with the casing 2 and forming a housing of a bearing 8 for the shaft 3 on which the inner element 6 is moun ted, the outer element 5 has oil outlet passages 10 which lie opposite the periphery of an oil slinger 4 mounted fast between the inner element 6 and the bearing 8, whilst the inner element 6 is formed with a helical groove 13 adjacent the slinger 4 and surrounded by a plain part 15 of the outer element 5 so that oil passing the slinger 4 from the bearing 8 is returned to the slinger 4. The part 15 of the element 5 is a sleeve of smaller outer diameter than the outer diameter of the slinger 4 and is located opposite the passages 10 whilst the periphery of the slinger 4 is inclined over the end of the sleeve into the space between the sleeve and the passages 10. If the bearing 8 fails the ribs and grooves on the element 5, 6 form an emergency bearing.
