Abstract
653,232. Endless conveyers. JOHNSON, J. A. Dec. 4, 1948, No. 31436. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group V] In an installation for casting sanitary earthenware, the articles in their moulds 16 travel along a moving main conveyer 11, Fig. 1, and are supported, wholly or partly, in a tilted position by supports 15, Fig. 4, carried by a lower auxiliary conveyer 12 travelling parallel with, and at the same speed as the main conveyer. The moulds 16 are assembled on the gravity roller conveyer 10, and filled with slip from a pipe (not shown). Each mould then moves forward along the main conveyer 11 at a very slow speed, e.g. 7¢ inches per minute for about 90 minutes. After this casting up time has elapsed, the mould is drained in two operations to let surplus slip run out. In order to release slip trapped in the pedestal in the same way that water is trapped in everyday usage, the mould is tilted on to supports or cradles 15, Fig. 4, consisting of side frames with cross-rails 15a carried by the auxiliary conveyer 12. The auxiliary conveyer may be driven either by gearing from the main conveyer drive or by a separate motor 13 and reduction gear 14, Fig. 2 (not shown). The mould travels in the fully tilted position for the length of the auxiliary conveyer and is then tilted back on to the conveyer 11. The mould is then carried through a drying oven 17 and the article is dried to the green stage. On passing to the conveyer 18, which runs at a higher speed than the conveyer 11, work is carried out on the article which is then passed through an oven 19. This oven encloses the final part of one straight length and the first part of the second straight length of the conveyer system, in addition to the connecting gravity. bend. The higher speed is maintained in the oven 19 and the article is dried to the leather hard state. On emerging, the mould passes on to a belt 20 running at a still higher speed, where the mould is separated from the article and reassembled on the conveyer. The article is then green fettled. The article and the mould next enter a third oven 21, on a belt which may run at the original very slow speed, for final drying of the article to the white state. Emerging from this oven the article is fettled and removed whilst the mould passes on to the conveyer 10 for re-use.
