Abstract

653,023. Jar &c. covers. DAVIES, D. E., and KLOET, H. C. May 25, 1948. No. 14034. [Class 125 (iii)] A rubber or other elastic cover A for a preserving jar has an integral flange B on its underside for gripping the neck of the jar around the periphery and means to permit the escape of gas from the jar, e.g. on heating, and to check any subsequent return of gas, the flange being so dimensioned as to permit jar necks E<SP>2</SP>, E<SP>1</SP> approximating to two different standard sizes, e.g. 2 lb. and 1 lb., to be operatively engaged by its outer and inner peripheries respectively. The inner and outer surfaces of the flange are formed with a plurality of circumferential ribs C, D, which may be of wedge shape, preferably with the upper side more steeply inclined to the flange than the lower side. A bevel F or radius G is preferably provided at the junction of the flange with the body to fit the rounded lips of the necks E', E<SP>2</SP>. Immediately above the flange B the cover is formed with a concentric preferably V-section groove L to increase the flexibility, and the marginal portion at the base of the flange B may be reinforced by a brass &c. stiffening ring. The cover is provided with a tapered vent hole H which is subsequently closed by a tapered slug I, e.g. of stainless steel, with a spherical or other head J, and may be permanently mounted by providing an enlargement M at the lower end of greater diameter than the lower end of the vent hole. The length of the vent hole may be increased by providing the cover with a central pip K or with a flat underside and convex upper surface, to increase the contact area between the hole and the plug. The plug I may be retained by a strap &c. separate from or integral with, the cover. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 7, a selfclosing vent is provided by longitudinal slots O at the three edges of the apex of a pyramidal pip N which lead into a conical cavity P. A flange may also be provided on the upper surface of the cover so that it can be used with jars of at least three different sizes.
