Abstract

<PICT:0652899/IV (c)/1> Colour is stripped from wool or other animal fibres by treating them with a solution containing vanadium, titanium or chromium ions in a low valency state derived from the region of the cathode of an electrolytic cell, and reducing the valency state of the higher valency ions formed during the stripping by electrolytic reduction of the solution, the liquids in the anode and cathode regions of the cell being separated by a porous diaphragm. The stripping is preferably carried out at a temperature above 75 DEG C. and in the presence of a wetting agent. Suitable apparatus comprises a vessel 4, an electrolytic cell 2 having a porous partition 8 and electrodes 10 and 12 of inert material such as tin, lead, platinum, graphite or an iron-silicon alloy, a reservoir 40 and a pump 18. Stripping may take place in the cell 2 or in vessel 4.
