Abstract

864,592. Batteries. ACCUMULATORENFABRIK A.G. April 22, 1959 [May 30, 1958], No. 13755/59. Class 53. Negative spongy lead electrodes for an accumulator are preserved from oxidation by being impregnated with an aqueous or alcoholic solution of boric acid and then dried. The acid may be applied by dipping or spraying, and the electrodes may be dried above the boiling point of water by infra-red radiation. Small quantities of phenol, cresol, methyl cellulose and other organic substances may be added to the boric acid solution. The treatment may also be carried out by using boric acid solution as the electrolyte in the forming process of the electrodes, and in this case sulphuric acid, aluminium sulphate or other salt having an acid reaction in solution may be added to the forming solution. The forming process may be conducted outside the accumulator in a boric acid solution, carbon or graphite being used as the second electrode,
