A dry cell having zinc and carbon electrodes and a manganese dioxide or activated carbon depolarizer has an acid electrolyte containing a metal oxide or hydroxide. The acid may be hydrochloric acid, sulphuric or phosphoric acid to which zinc oxide or calcium oxide has been added. Ammonium chloride may be included in the electrolyte which is thickened with starch, cellulose derivatives &c.
