Abstract

913,325. Making pure gallium electrolytically. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Sept. 28, 1961 [Sept. 30, 1960], No. 34991/61. Class 41. Pure gallium is produced by using as electrolyte a solution of Ga(GaX 4 ) where X is a halogen, in a non-aqueous solvent, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon, and using an impure gallium metal anode. The gallium complex may be obtained by treating gallium tri-halide with gallium, and extracting the complex with benzene or toluene ; some part of other insoluble metal halides are thereby removed. In a suitable and sealed apparatus, molten gallium 1 forms the anode, connected to an electrical lead 2, above which is the electrolyte 7 which also fills the circulatory tube system 8, 9, 13 and is connected to a reflux condenser 12. A cathode 3 consists of a platinum wire coated with gallium melt, and a voltage of about 15 to 20 v. is applied, to give a high current density at the small cathode. The heating effect thereby created, maintains circulation of the electrolyte by thermo-siphon. Pure gallium in molten state falls into a duct 4 connected to a reservoir 5 by a capilliary 6 prefilled with pure gallium. The gallium may also be produced in powder form by using a lower current density at the cathode.
