Abstract
Aqueous dispersions of organic high polymers such as natural or synthetic rubber are rendered less corrosive to metallic surfaces by adding to the dispersion a salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid such as sodium or other alkali metal, or zinc or magnesium benzoate. Sodium nitrite may also be added. Preferably, sodium benzoate in saturated solution is added to the latex in an amount up to 10 per cent of the weight of the rubber, the sodium nitrite may be up to 2 per cent, the chloride content of the latex should be kept below 0.1 per cent. Inert fillers, pigments and waterproofing agents such as wax may be added. Articles made of metal such as steel may be sprayed with or immersed in the treated latex until a protective film about 0.5 mm. thick is formed, which film may be dried at 70 DEG C. In the dipping process the article may be suspended by a tape which is left in position. Zinc benzoate may be used as a suspension obtained by ball milling the salt in the presence of ammonium caseinate solution.
