Articles are given an adherent rubber coating by the application of a mixture containing rubber latex and sodium silicate, followed by drying and treatment of the dry coat with acid, such as carbon dioxide or hydrogen chloride gas, to render the silicate insoluble. Additional coats of latex may be applied to the latex-silicate coating, if desired after heating the latter to 50 DEG C. The absorbent properties of the rubber coating may be reduced and the coating rendered impervious to water and hydrochloric acid by after-treatment with a wax or the like as described in Specification 365,466. The visibly "waxen" surface resulting can be rendered "dry" in appearance by maintaining above the melting point of the wax for 15--30 minutes.
