Abstract
Insoluble sulphur is produced by introducing molten sulphur at above 200 DEG C., e.g. 350-420 DEG C., into an expanding stream of a gas which does not react with insoluble sulphur or cause its reversion to soluble sulphur, e.g. steam, flue gas, carbon dioxide, air, nitrogen, or sulphur dioxide. The sulphur may be introduced near the point at which a cold anhydrous expanding gas stream is released and a stabilizer for insoluble sulphur such as chlorine, <FORM:0652421/III/1> bromine, iodine, sulphur chloride or bromide may be added, before or after dispersion, to the extent of 0.1-1.0 per cent. The sulphur is melted, filtered into a storage tank at 140-150 DEG C., filtered into a feed tank where the stabilizer is added, heated to 400 DEG C., and dispersed in the gas stream directed at a rotating hollow cylinder cooled with brine. The sulphur m is removed from the cylinder, passed to a masticator, e.g. a rubber mill, for partial curing, given a final curing at 30-50 DEG C., and ground in a brine jacketted mill. As shown, the disperser has a central tube 4 for molten sulphur, surrounded by insulating intermediate pipe 3, between which and housing 1 flows compressed gas from pipe 11. The gas flows through adjustable orifice 2 directed at the molten stream of sulphur from orifice 5, the point of emergence of the sulphur may also be adjusted relative to the gas stream. Alternative dispersers are also described. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also introducing sulphur vapour into the expanding gas stream. This subject-matter is not included in the Specification as accepted.
