Abstract

b -Di-(arylmethyl)-aminoethanols are manufactured by causing 1-aminoethanol-2 to react with an arylmethyl halide, the aryl residue of which may be substituted, in the presence or absence of an acid-binding substance. In examples: (1) ethanolamine is treated with benzyl chloride in the presence of potassium carbonate to produce b -dibenzylaminoethanol; the product on treatment with thionyl chloride yields the hydrochloride of b -dibenzylaminoethyl chloride; (2) the reaction of (1) is carried out in the absence of an acid-binding substance; (3) ethanolamine is treated with 4-chlorobenzyl chloride, yielding b -di-(4-chlorobenzyl)-aminoethanol; (4) ethanolamine is treated with a -menaphthyl chloride in the presence of sodium carbonate, producing b -di-(a <1>-menaphthyl)-aminoethanol. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the manufacture of derivatives from other 1-amino-alkylols-2, and describes in an example the production of 1-dibenzylaminopropanol-2 from 1-aminopropanol-2 and benzyl chloride in the presence of potassium carbonate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
