Abstract

Amides having a basic substituent linked to the nitrogen atom are obtained by treating a carboxylic acid or a metallic salt thereof, in the presence of an inorganic acid halide, with a polyamine in which a primary or secondary amino group and a tertiary amino group are linked by an open chain. The reaction may be effected at about 100 DEG C. in the presence or absence of a solvent. Examples are given in which diphenylacetic acid, benzoic acid, and N-allyl-2-quinolone-4-carboxylic acid are treated with diethylaminoethylamine, in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride, to yield the corresponding diethylaminoethylamides. Specification 438,659 is referred to. N-Allyl-2-quinolone-4-carboxylic acid is obtainable from carbostyril carboxylic acid and an allyl halide in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 mentions acetic acid, palmitic acid, and oleic acid on the one hand, and piperidinoethylamine, diethylaminoethylethylamine, and bis-(diethylaminoethyl)amine on the other hand, as starting materials for the process of the invention. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
