Abstract
A halogenalkylsulphonic acid in which the sulphonic group and the halogen occupy 1 : 3-positions is reacted with a tertiary amine, the nitrogen atom of which forms part of aring, or with a tertiary amine of the formula NRR<1>R<11>, where R, R<1> and R<11> are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups, which may be substituted. The reaction involves the elimination of hydrogen halide, and the products ("sulphobetaines") are believed to contain the group N--O--SO2--CH2 as part of a ring. Specified sulphonic acids are 1 - chloro - 2 - oxypropane - 3 - sulphonic acid, 2 - chlorobutane - 4 - sulphonic acid, and 2 - bromo - 3 - oxybutane - 4 - sulphonic acid. Specified amines are quinoline, pyridine and their homologues and substitution products, such as picolines, collidines, hydroxypyridines and halogenpyridines, and also triethylamine, dimethyllaurylamine, dimethyloleylamine, dimethylaniline, and triethanolamine. The products are useful as assistants in the textile industry and in printing with vat dyes (cf. Specification 446,265). Examples are given of the manufacture of products from 1 chloro-2-oxypropane-3-sulphonic acid and pyridine, g -picoline, quinoline, 3-oxypyridine, dimethylaniline, triethylamine, and triethanolamine.
