Abstract

In the production of chlorine dioxide hydrate by passing sulphur dioxide into an acidified solution of a chlorate, e.g. sodium chlorate acidified with sulphuric acid, and absorbing the chlorine dioxide produced in water, the sulphur dioxide and chlorine dioxide are carried by an inert gas, e.g. air, which is circulated between the chlorine dioxide generation and absorption stages, the absorption and generation stages being connected by a water pump connected at its lower end to a separation chamber from which water is returned to the pump and gas to the circuit. Liquids other than water, e.g. oil, may also be used in the pump. In a modification the water pump and connected separation chamber act as generator. A vent may be provided in the circuit for the removal of gas or the addition of inert gas. Superatmospheric pressure may be maintained if desired. The proportion of sulphur dioxide to air may be 1 to 4. The temperature in the generator may be 30-50 DEG C. The concentration of chlorine dioxide produced may be 20-30 per cent. The generator may be equipped with rupture plates to prevent damage due to to an explosion. The absorber is maintained at a temperature of ca-1 to +1 DEG C. by the addition of ice or by means of a cooling jacket or cooling coils through which water or brine is circulated. The separation chamber may be surrounded by a jacket for controlling the temperature. The supply of sulphur dioxide may be cut off in the event of trouble in the compressor system by means of a solenoid valve connected with a manometer. Solution may be continuously or periodically removed from the generator for crystallizing out sulphate formed therein and for fortifying with further chlorate. The apparatus can also be used for the reaction of chlorine with an aqueous solution of a chlorite to produce chlorine dioxide, and also for the recovery of a solvent evaporated from a material by passing a heated stream of inert gas through the material. Specification 742,898 is referred to.
