[Classes 16 and 146 (i)] In an indexing device in which a desired card or leaf of a pack can be exposed at will on opening the cover of the device by first moving a slider or cursor along an indicating scale to the desired letter, figure or mark, the indicating scale bar is formed as an integral metal pressing with the cover by appropriately spaced incisions in the pressing and displacement of the metal between them or at the side margins of the incisions. The slider or cursor is also preferably formed as a metal pressing. An oblong cover 10 is pressed from sheet metal to have flanges 11 on two sides and one end, the other end being curved at 12 and gapped and flanged centrally at 13 to provide a resilient lip 16 to engage with a spring pressed catch 14 on the back plate 15 of the device. The rear flange 11 is formed with alternate rolled tongues 17, by which the cover is hinged to the back plate 15 on a hinge pin 18, and outwardly bent tongues 19 to engage tongues 20 on the back plate 15 to limit the opening of the cover 10. Parallel cuts are made in the cover to provide an indicating bar 21, marked or pressed with the appropriate letters, and short lateral cuts 22 outwardly so that the margins 23 may be pressed inwardly. A rib 24 is pressed in the bar 21 to stiffen it and grooves are pressed in the margins 23 to form ribs 25 to correspond with the letters on the bar 21. The cursor 26 is formed with a central recess 29 and with shallow flanges 27 at each end and deep flanges 28 which pass through the cover on either side of the bar 21 and have tongues 30 which pass through and are clinched over holes in a selector strap 31. The selector strap 31 has inwardly bent arms 33 to engage the edges of the cards on the back and has spring arms 32 curved upwardly to strap between adjacent ribs 25. For holding the cards, a metal strip 34 is hinged on the pin 18 and has tongues 36 to engage slots in the cards. The curved ends 35 of the strip 34 press against the flanges 11 and normally retain the strip 34 in the cover, but may be disengaged to allow the strip 34 to be moved out for the cover for removal or addition of cards on the tongues 36. The catch 14 on the back plate 15 is urged against the lip 16 by a flange 40 on a spring blade 37, the blade 37 being clinched against the back plate by pressed out lugs 38. In a suggested modification the side margins 23 are not depressed but the bar 21 is raised above the cover.
