An index device and holder for loose papers comprises a base element 1 provided with guide means on which are slidably mounted a pair of supports 2 which are stable in operative position, and a set of index panels 3 also slidably mounted on the base 1 between the supports 2, these panels being capable of angular movement to enable them, and loose papers filed between them, to be swung over to rest on one or other of the supports 2. The element 1 is of sheet metal &c. and includes a plate 4 with bent over ends to provide feet 5, and downturned sides 6 which form guides. Each support 2 is of inverted V-shape having carrier portions 8 which rest on the plate 4 and side cheeks 9 which extend downwardly, inwardly, and then upwardly to embrace the guides 6 on the plate 4, so that the support is slidably retained on the plate 4. A fitting 10 on each support 2 has a spring-pressed ball 11 arranged to snap into one of a number of holes 12 in the plate 4. Each index panel 3 may be of synthetic plastic material with an upwardly extending tab secured thereto which is inscribed with identifying symbols. The bottom edge of each panel 3 is extended downwardly, inwardly, and then upwardly at each end to slidably engage the guides 6 on the plate 4 with sufficient clearance to allow the panel to be inclined. The plate 4 is narrower at each end near the foot 5, and a gap 17 is provided to facilitate removal of the panels 3.
