An indexing means for application to documents, drawings, file folders &c. comprises a base member 1 of sheet material, a strip 3 secured thereto and provided with an upper serrated &c. edge 4 which is spaced from the top edge 2 of the base 1 such that index strips or tabs 9 or 10 with correspondingly shaped bottom edges can be located between the edge 2 and the strip 3, and a transparent retaining strip 6 which is secured at its bottom end to the base 1, folded over the upper edge 2, and releasably secured to the top edge at the back of the base 1. The strip 3 may be secured by adhesive to the base 1, and the retainer 6 may be stuck either on the strip 3 or to base 1 by means of a strip 5. The top free end of the retainer 6 can have an adhesive textile strip 7 thereon which co-operates with a similar textile strip 8 on the back of the base 1 to provide a readily releasable securing means, but pressstud fasteners or other releasable fasteners could be used. The index strips or tabs 9 or 10 can be located in various positions on the base 1, and are retained in each position by the retainer 6 and the interengaging serrations 4. The base 1 could form part of a file folder, or it may be attached by clips or fasteners to a file folder, a drawing, or other document. Suspension hooks may also be provided on the ends of the base 1 so that the documents or folders can be placed in a suspension file. In a further modification, the base 1 has the upper half, which carries the index strips &c. 9, 10, bent backwardly so that the index strips &c. can be more readily seen.
