To all whom it may (107%(7'0771 Be it known that I, JOHN L. Rrvnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of lVashington, have invented a new and useful Clip and Support for Vertical File Folders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new article of manufacture'a support for each individual folder in a vertical file. Vertical file l1olders, as they become filled, have a tendency to sag down from a vertical position and the papers in the folder then obstruct from view the data usually found on the top edge of the folder, making it more difiicult to find the desired folder, and the folders occupying more room in the file than is necessary. The object of my invention is to provide a support that will hold each individual folder with its contents in a vertical position, to afford a projection above the folder whereby any folder can be easily identified and removed from the file, and also rigid means for the easy insertion of a folder and contents back in the file.

I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a front plan View of the device when attached to a vertical file folder.

The preferred form of the device consists of a single piece of wire formed substa11- tially as shown in Fig. 8, theend of the wire bent in circular form, 1, and the bend at 2 constituting; holding and clamping means for file and contents; the wire 3 provides vertical support to the folder, and the ring 4, projecting above the folder, is useful in lifting the clip and folder out of file and is also convenient in separating or locating any desired folder in a file. This projection 4i has a particularly useful function. In a vertical file, not provided with these clips, the folders, as they become filled, sag down and the papers contained therein have a tendency to cover up the name and other marks of identification usually placed at the top edge of the folder, so it requires consid- Specification of Letters Patent.

erable effort for the user to locate the folder desired. By the use of these clips all the folders and contents are held in a vertical position, the identity of each folder is plainly discernable by means of this ring 4, in connection with data on the top edge of the folder, and the ring also makes it convenient to lift'the folder out of the file. Each individual folder is compactly held and supported in a vertical position, and the user can, with the aid of these projecting rings, pull toward him the different folders, and quickly find and remove those desiredno loose, sagging folders to handle.

Fig. 6 illustrates a modified form of the clip and support. It is made of a single piece of sheet metal, one end of which, is bent over to afford clamping means 5 and holding means 6 for a vertical file holder, 7 acts as the vertical support to the folder. The other end 8, is substantially rectangular in form; is designed to project above the folder and perform the same functions as the ring l, with this additional feature: It is provided with a slit near each side, 9 and 9, and the sheet metal therebetween 10 is slightly depressed to permit the insertion of a card to contain data concerning the folder; for instance, the name, date, etc. The bend 6 also gives more longitudinal support to the folder than is found in the form illustrated by Fig. 3.

The essential feature of this invention is means for holding and supporting in a vertical file individual folders and contents in a vertical position, and to provide rigid means for inserting, and convenient means for locating and withdrawing any inclividual folder. It is obvious that the device can be modified in many particulars, by almost anyone, and achieve thereby practically the same results, hence I ask that I not be limited to the details of construction as shown.

I claim.

1. A clip and support for a vertical file folder, comprising a body member adapted to support said folder vertically in a file, said. member carrying at its top portion a lift, at its lower portion an element adapted to clampingly hold said folder and con tents.

A clip and support for a vertical file folder, comprising a body'member adapted to support said folder vertically in a file, said member carrying at its top portion a member located, when in operative position, slightly above the folder, carrying means whereby said folder is identified, at its lower portion a holding element adapted to afford lateral support to lower edge of said folder and contents, and connected therewith a member whereby said folder and contents are clampingly held.
