LOOSE-LEAF BINDER Filed Nov. 5', 1945 INVENTOR. 90257 flaze Jr.

Patented June 14, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to holders for loose sheets in the nature of a binder having not only a series of impaling posts to enter the perforations of the sheets, but a clamping jaw designed to grip the sheets along the bound marginal edge thereof.
The important object of this invention is'to provide a loose-leaf binder of the aforementioned character, having parts assembled in a manner which reduces the cost of manufacture, expedites the construction, and therefore, renders the assembly more desirable because of the simplicity thereof.
One of the important objects of this invention is to provide a loose-leaf binder having a pair of covers, one of which is flexible while the other is stiff to support the flexible cover and metal assembly in a particular manner and through the use of common means that serves the purpose of anchoring the said covers together with the metal in operative position.
Other objects of the invention include specific structural refinements made possible because of the form of the binder covers, all of which will appear during the course of the following specification, referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the loose-leaf binder made in accordance with the present invention, but with the upper cover eliminated for clearness of illustration.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line IIII of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line III-III of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale and with the top cover and a portion of the metal assembly in a position to release the sheets.
In constructing a binder to embody the features of my invention, I preferably employ a base cover l formed of stiff material and grooved as at I2 along one marginal edge thereof. A flexible cover I4 is fitted into groove l2 to have its end in abutting relation to shoulder l6, formed by the said groove.
The length of upper cover I4 is sufl'icient to dispose the free edge 18 thereof in substantial alignment with the free edge 20 of cover In when a filler 22 is in place.
A metal assembly comprising a fixed section 24 an a section 26 that is hinged to said section 24, is secured to cover H! as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Fixed section 24 is substantially L-shaped in transverse cross section and one leg thereof rests upon the upper surface of cover l4 after it has been fitted into groove 12. The depth of groove I2 is sufiicient to bring the upper surface of section 24 into the same plane as the upper surface of cover l0 and when rivets 28 are in place,
covers l0 and M, as well as the metal assembly comprising sections 24 and 26, are held in operative position by common means. There is a series of rivets 28 but two has been found sufiicient where the width of the binder is not great.
The specific arrangement of parts is important in order that the objects may be fulfilled, and while some latitude is permitted by the breadth of the claim, the features present at the zone of juncture between covers [0 and I2 and the metal assembly are important and not subject to such change as would eliminate therefrom the advantages which arise from the combination as illustrated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A loose-leaf binder of the kind described comprising a pair of overlapped covers; a sheet holding metal assembly mounted on the covers at their overlapped portions; and common means for securing together the overlapped covers and the metal assembly, one of said covers being relatively stiff and provided with a marginal groove thereacross, the other cover being fitted into the groove, said metal assembly being on top of the other cover along the area thereof fitted into the groove, the cover fitted into the groove being flexible and rebent upon itself over the metal assembly and over one side of the cover having the groove formed therein, the said groove being substantially as deep as the thickness of the flexible cover and one member of the metal assembly whereby to present a smooth planar surface for sheets when placed in the binder.
