Abstract

652,331. Heat insulation. THOMAS, G. Sept. 16, 1948, No. 24312. [Class 64(ii)] An annular dead-air chamber 12 is formed, or a number of such chambers are formed, around a pipe 9 by tubular sheathing, e.g. of sheet metal or synthetic resin, bearing on spaced collars 10 of insulating material, the sheathing being built up from a pair or pairs of units 11, 11a each of substantially semi-tubular form. The exterior surface of pipe 9 may be provided with a thin sleeve 20 of solid insulation or with a heat-reflecting coating or sleeve. The collars 10 and sleeves 20 are formed as pairs of semi-tubular units and secured by adhesive tape 19. Bands 13 completed by a screw and nut 15 or hooked springs 16, Fig. 6, holds the sheathing units in position, the overlapping longitudinal edges of the units 11, 11a being sealed by an intervening layer of bituminous or like plastic substance 18 and joined by short screws 17.
