Abstract

Bodies of plastic-bonded mineral wool, such as slabs or hollow cylinders or sectors thereof for insulating purposes are sprayed with a fibre-forming solution or melt of a thermoplastic organic material so that a coherent coating of fibres and filaments of the thermoplastic is formed on the surface of the body, and anchored therein. The thermoplastic materials may be polybutadiene or polybutadiene derivatives, <PICT:0787396/III/1> polyethylene or vinyl or vinylidene polymerizates or copolymerizates. As shown, the coating 13 may be applied to semi-cylindrical pipe insulation shells 10, 11, in such manner as to provide a hinge 14 between them, and a flap 15 for securing the shells round a pipe may be formed by placing a strip of metal against the parts during coating. The thermoplastic may be coloured, e.g. with chromium or iron oxides, ultramarine blue or aluminium powder, and substances for increasing its resistance to ageing or heat or for reducing its inflammability may also be added. In examples, solutions of polyvinyl acetate in acetone, and of a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride in a mixture of toluol and acetone, are sprayed at room temperature on bodies of plastic bonded mineral wool; or molten polyvinylidene chloride is sprayed by a steam spraying machine, the coatings being in the form of fibres or filaments. The treatment may be so carried out that the coating is of a varying character in different layers, or two or more layers of different materials may be applied. The coating may serve as a support for a facing material, e.g. a metal plate or fibre board.
