Abstract

A powdered moulding composition comprising sand coated with polyethylene is obtained by mixing sand with polyethylene in an amount not exceeding 16% by weight of the whole, followed by heating to form a dough which separates into coated particles on cooling. The polyethylene may be initially in the form of a solid, latex or solution. Optional ingredients are glass fibre, asbestos and pigments such as red iron oxide. The compositions may be formed into flower pots or into building components such as blocks, tiles, sheets or pipes, which may be impregnated with cement or reinforced with wires or rods. Laminates may be obtained wherein outer layers according to the invention are bonded to inner layers of thermal or sound insulating material. Further the outer layers may be coated or impregnated with bitumen, paint or aluminium foil. Examples I and II illustrate the manufacture of tiles which are coated with polyvinyl acetate sealer and coloured melamine lacquers. Example IV illustrates the production of sheet or tiles by moulding a layer of polyethylene coated sand on to a sheet of polyester or polyester polyethylene laminate or woven fabric.
