Abstract
652,134. Electromagnets. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. Sept. 13, 1948, Nos. 24027 and 32360. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXIV] The disengagement-opposing effect of remanence between the engaging faces of two coacting ferro-magnetic members of an electromagnetic friction clutch is minimized by making either or both members resilient and with corrugated engaging faces, whereby on clutch de-energization, the resilience returns to normal the amplitude of the corrugations reduced during energization, to increase the reluctance of the magnetic circuit. As shown, a resilient armature 27, having three facial corrugations, and a plane-faced electromagnet 16, both of high permeability, low coercivity metal and engaged by a winding 17 fed by slip rings 20, 21, are connected respectively with a driven gear 24 and with a driving shaft 12. The armature 27 is mounted on a resilient circular corrugated metal diaphragm 26 loading it to the disengaged position located by a bracket 30, and the electromagnet 16 is carried by an integral plate 15 secured by bolts 14 to a driving shaft flange 13, a support 18, secured to the plate 15, bearing a slip-ring carrying plate 19.
