Abstract

651,556. Rod and wire couplings etc.; pipes and tubes, joints &c. for. ATLAS STONE CO., Ltd., and WELLS, J. W. H. June 29, 1948, No. 17471. [Class 99(i)] [Also in Groups XXV and XXX] A device for gripping and pulling a rod, cable or wire comprises a casing 1 with a forwardly tapered bore 7 in which is a frusto-conical cage 8 bored radially to receive four sets of balls 14, 17 and urged forwardly by a spring 18. The balls are of increasing size from front to rear of the cage. A rod 4 can be inserted from the front of the casing but cannot be withdrawn forwardly. In a modification, the cage has a threaded tail which protrudes from the rear of the casing and is fitted with a nut whereby the cage may be pulled rearwardly against the spring to release the grip on the rod. In both forms, the casing has an external shoulder 3 to which a pulling device may be applied.
