Abstract

Sheet wrapping material, suitable for the wrapping of ferrous metal articles, comprises flexible regenerated cellulose sheet or film wherein there is incorporated a corrosion-restraining organic compound comprising a water - soluble orthophthalate having the formula C6H4(COOR1)2 or C6H4(COO)2R11, wherein R1 represents an atom of an alkali metal or the ammonium group (NH4), and R11 represents an atom of an alkaline earth metal or of magnesium. The corrosion inhibitor may be disodium orthophthalate or magnesium orthophthalate. Dipotassium, diammonium, and calcium orthophthalates are said to be less satisfactory. The proportion of orthophthalate should preferably be at least 0.5 per cent, e.g. 4-8 per cent (optimum about 5 per cent) based on the combined weights of cellulose and any softening agent which may be present. The softening agent may be glycerine (e.g. 10-25 per cent by weight or more based on the combined weights of cellulose and glycerine). Urea, sometimes employed as a softening agent of regenerated cellulose, is said to promote corrosion and hence to be unsatisfactory. The corrosion inhibitor may be introduced into the sheet after the latter has been formed by impregnating the sheet with an aqueous solution containing at least about 0.17 per cent of the inhibitor. The solution may also contain a softening agent. The regenerated cellulose sheet is preferably impregnated while in the gel state. Alternatively, the inhibitor may be introduced into the sheet by spraying the latter, after the application of the softening agent, with a fine spray of an aqueous solution of the inhibitor. In an example dried softened regenerated cellulose film is freed from softening agent by soaking in water, and the wet film is impregnated by immersion for 30 seconds at 60 DEG C. in an aqueous solution containing 6.0 per cent of glycerine and 4.0 per cent of disodium orthophthalate. The film is then transferred to a polished plate, excess liquid removed from the surface by means of a rubber squeegee, and the film dried in a current of warm air. Comparative rusting tests are described using as test pieces polished mild steel plates wrapped in regenerated cellulose films with and without orthophthalates.
