Abstract
Cellulosic material is bleached by means of a chlorite solution which has been activated by adding thereto a hydrolysable chlorinated organic compound sensitive to the oxidizing action of the chlorite solution so as to form an acid capable of lowering the pH of the solution. Examples of suitable activating compounds are chloroethylenes, chloroethanes, chloromethanes, chlorhydrins and a a 1b b 1 - tetrachlorodiethyl ether. In one form of the invention, e.g. with cellulose acetate, the cellulosic material is dissolved in the hydrolysable chlorinated organic compound and is gradually precipitated as the organic compound disappears by reaction with the chlorite or by dissolution in the chlorite bath. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes also the subject-matter of Specification 651,450. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Cellulosic material is bleached by means of a chlorite solution which has been activated by adding thereto a hydrolysable chlorinated organic compound sensitive to the oxidizing action of the chlorite solution so as to form an acid capable of lowering the pH value of the solution. In an example, unbleached linen is bleached in a solution of sodium chlorite at pH 10.5 to which tetrachloroethane has been added.
