Abstract
Peracetic acid is stabilized with an acid of the general formul <FORM:0917495/IV (b)/1> and/or soluble salts thereof, n being at least 1. Specified acids are those wherein n is 1 or 2, and also commercial "polyaminocarboxylic acid". The solutions are used for bleaching (see Group IV(c)).ALSO:The invention comprises a bleaching solution containing peracetic acid and an organic acid of the general formula <FORM:0917495/IV (b)/1> and/or soluble salts thereof, n being at least 1. The preferred acid is diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid, other specified acids being triethylene tetramine hexa-acetic acid and "polyaminocarboxylic acid". The solution is prepared by mixing together acetic anhydride and hydrogen peroxide and adding to the mixture the organic acid and/or salt thereof. Preferably the solution also contains sodium acetate, this preferably being initially added to the hydrogen peroxide. The solution preferably has a pH of 4.5.5.5 and may be adjusted to this value by the use of, for example, acetic acid, sodium carbonate, ammonia or tetrasodium pyrophosphate. The products to be bleached, which may be fibres or fibrous or non-fibrous materials, may be treated with a pre-formed bleach solution or the solution may be prepared in situ, the bleach bath normally being heated, e.g. to 75 DEG -80 DEG C. for nylon and to 85 DEG -90 DEG C. for cotton.
