Abstract

651,192. Moulding recessed articles from reinforced resin. ALTMAN, E. March 15, 1946, No. 8150. [Class 87 (ii)] A recessed article such as a suitcase, including a reinforcement or base, which may have a felted structure, coated on one or both sides with a moulding composition comprising thermoplastic or thermosetting resin is made as follows : The preformed reinforcement is introduced between two dies 1, 2 which are then closed to form a mould, as shown in Fig. 2. The die 2 comprises an outer frame 7, which co-operates with the die 1 to form a closed chamber, and an inner piston-like member 9 adapted to define a variable cavity within the mould and forming the mould core. Moulding composition is introduced before or after the mould is closed ; if it is introduced after the mould is closed it is injected through an aperture provided in one or both dies. The mould being closed, piston 9 is raised (Fig. 3) to compress and distribute the material, normally under heat. Die 1 is carried by a platform 3 fixed on pillars 4. Die 2 is carried by a platform 5 which slides on pillars 4 under the influence of hydraulically-operated rams 6. The ram 10 which moves the member 9 also is hydraulically-operated. The moulding composition may be introduced into the mould in the solid state, or may be incorporated in the reinforcement while the latter is being preformed to the desired shape. The composition may be applied mainly only to that side which will be the outer side of the finished article. The reinforcement may be treated with a material which will promote adhesion of the composition thereto.
