Abstract

650,653. Endless conveyers. RICHARDS, P. G., and ROPER, D. R. Dec. 14, 1948, No. 32311. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Groups I, VI and XXIV] In a machine for topping and tailing onions, shallots, turnips, &c. each held between spring jaws 9 of an intermittently advanced endless belt conveyer 2, each onion presses apart spring-pressed feelers 19 to which the knives 12, Fig. 6, are attached to adjust the spacing of the knives to the size of the onion. The initial spacing of the knives is adjustable by nuts 24. The knives are also provided with slots 23 to allow of their arcuate adjustment. A reciprocator 16 actuates the conveyer step - by - step by first pulling along a chain 29, thus turning the sprocket of a shaft 8 on which is mounted one of the end polygonal wheels 30 thereby moving the gripper conveyer 2 one step. On the return part of the reciprocation the chain 29 is slackened to allow a spring 31 to pull it back by means of a free wheel drive on the shaft 8. This return part of the reciprocation also forces the knives against the now stationary onion to cut off its ends. The shafts 6 and 8 are provided with friction couplings. The spring jaws 9 of the grippers are secured to separate plates 3 on the conveyer so that as they traverse around the polygonal wheels 5 and 7 at the ends they open out in turn to receive an onion placed therein by hand, and at the other end they open out again to allow the cut onion to fall out.
