Abstract

650,296. Stoppers. ZALASIEWITZ, H. Nov. 26, 1948, No. 30807. [Class 125(iii)] A stopper for bottles &c. having cones 8, 9 which, when moved towards one another, expand the body 3 of the stopper radially against the bottle neck, is characterized by the middle zone of the stopper being incapable of radial expansion, whereby an air space is maintained between two zones of contact with the bottle neck so that when the cones are again separated, removal of the stopper is facilitated. The body 3 may be made by vulcanizing expansible end sleeves or sheaths to a non-expansible middle part, but, as shown, the whole of the body is in one piece and is of expansible material, a metal ring 12 holding the middle zone against radial expansion. The cone 8 is formed on a closure plate 2 which is knurled so that it may be held against rotation. A head 1, rotatable by wings, has a threaded bore 6 in which screws the head 5 of a square section rod 4 carrying the cone 9. The rod 4 passes through a square hole in the cone 8 so that it is held against rotation during the turning of the head 1. In a modification, the closure 2 is dispensed with, the cone 8 being carried by the head 1 which, in this case is not rotatable, the rod 4 having rack-teeth which are engaged by a pinion pivoted in a slot in the head and operated by a lever.
