STOPPEB FOR HOT-WATER BOTTLES.
esa tea.
Application filed February 7, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, Ar B. SHAW, a citizen of the United States of America. and a resident of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, Stoppers for lrlot-Vl ater Bottles. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stoppers for hot water bottles and the like and has for its object 'the production of a device of this character which will prevent leakage through the filling opening when the stopper is properly positioned therein.
The invention consists primarily in providing a packing disk so mounted on the stopper that when the packing disk is on its seat the stopper may be rotated without effecting the rotation of said disk.
The invention further consists in interposing between said disk and stopper of a metal washer which rotates only with said disk and is adapted to contact with the end of the stopper and prevent the packing disk from being worn by the rotation ofthe stopper when said disk is non-revolubly positioned upon its seat.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be understood readily by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having; been found to give satisfactory and reliable results although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described except as required by the scope of the appended claims.
()f the drawings: Figure 1 represents a section of the-upper portion of a hot water bottle showing; applied thereto a stopper embodying the features of the present invention.
Figure 2 represents an elevation of the stopper.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented Ju1y18. was.
Serial No. 442,968.
Figure 8 represents an elevation of the screw for supporting the packingdisk of the stopper. I
Figure 4 represents a section of a portion of the bottom of the stopper.
Figure 5 represents a section of a metal washer to be mounted on the screw. 7
Figure 6 represents a section of the packing disk of the stopper, and
Figure 7 represents a section of a smaller washer for clamping the packing; disk to the larger washer.
Similar characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawing's.
In the drawings, 10 represents a portion of the upper end of a hot water bottle having embedded therein a threaded socket 11 provided at the bottom with the inwardly extending flange 12.
A threaded stopper 13 is adapted to be screwed into the socket 11 by means of a handle 14.
Extending through the bottom wall 15 of the stopper 13 is a screw 16 havinpa head 17 and a threaded shank 18.
The distance between the head 17 and the end of the thread 18 is slightly in excess of the thickness of the bottom 15 of the stopper 13.
The screw 16 is in axial alinement with the stopper 13 and a metal washer 19 is nositioned on the threaded end 18 of the shank of said screw 16, said washer being turned on the thread 18 to the extreme end thereof so that nofurther movement of the vwasher toward the head 17 is permitted.
The threaded shank 18 also extends through a packing. disk 20 of rubber or some similar resilient material and this disk 20 is forced against the face of the washer 19 by the smaller washer 21 threaded to the shank 18 as shown in Figs. land 2 of the drawings.
The head 17 is provided with a screwdriver slot 22 and the shank 18 is similarly provided with a screw-driver slot 23.
The slot 22 is utilized to prevent the screw 16 from turning when the washers 19 and 21 are being turned upon the shank 18 in the originalinstallation of the various ele ments of the stopper. 1
When the disk 20 is clamped between the washers 19 and 21, said disk 20 is obliged to turn with said washers and with the screw 16 onwhich said washers are threaded.
The opening 25 in the bottom 15 of the stopper 13 is free from threads or other projections and in this opening 25 the screw 16 is free to rotate.
l Vhen the stopper is being turned in the socket 11 no action on the packing disk 20 takes place until said disk comes into contact with the annular flange 12 on said socket 11.
As soon as contact is made between the disk 20 and the flange 12, the friction between the two will prevent the packing disk 20 rotating about its axis relatively to said flange 12, but the stopper 13 may continue to be rotated. in the socket 11 thereby jamming the packing disk 20 against the flange 12 and making a perfectly tight fit through which no water can escape.
The jamming of the central portion of the packing disk 20 by means of the smaller washer 21 causes the packing memberto be forced against the threads of the screw 16 and makes a non-leakable joint through which none of the water in the bottle 10 can escape.
As the washer 19 is interposed between the rubber packing disk 20 and the bottom wall 15 of the stopper 18, when the stopper 13 is turned, the wall 15 will contact with the washer 19 which is of metal and therefore not easily injured.
This interposing of the washer 19 between the packing disk 20 and the bottom of the stopper 13 is a most important feature of the invention as in the turning of the stopper the rubber disk 20 will not be injured by contacting with the bottom wall 15. Moreover when the disk 20 is brought into contact with its seat on the flange 12, it will not be injured by the stopper rubbing in contact therewith.
.[n the stoppers now in general. use the packing disk is secured permanently to the stopper and when the stopper is rotated and" the rubber disk is in contact with its seat, the rubbing contactis liable to injure and soon destroy the packing and as there is no ready means of renewing this packing the entire stopper is useless and an entirely new stopper must be provided. 7
In the present invention as soon as the rubber packing disk 20 comes in contactwith the flange 12, the friction between these two surfaces is suflicient to prevent the disk from rota-ting with the stopper and. as a conse quence there is no injury thereto.
Should the rubber disk deteriorate, it may readily be renewed. by
inserting a tool, such as a screw-driver in the slot and then removing the smaller washer 2 and packing dlsk 20.
After this disk 20 has ben removed, a new disk 20 may be placed upon the shank 18 of the screw 16 and the locking washer 21. then replaced on the threaded shank l8 and jammed against the packing disk 20.
This simple construction of stopper is most effective in use for it makes the hot water bottle positively non-leakable at this point and the life of the stopper is greatly prolongeoh Moreover, it provides a means whereby a new packing disk may be placed quickly upon the stopper thus making it unnecessary to throw away the body of the stopper.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be understood without further description.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
