[Class 120(ii)] A thread-advancing reel comprises a rotatable series of bars divided into a plurality of inter-digitating sets and arranged parallel to one another approximately in the form of a cylinder, the bars being caused to reciprocate radially and lengthwise by means cf electromagnets of strength varying in accordance with the angular position of the bars. The reel comprises a central shaft 8, brackets 14 mounted thereon by means of flat springs 15 and rotatable with it. hollow open-sided yarncarrying magnetic bars 9, 11 provided with magnetic projections 13 at one end, sleeves 18 mounted on and rotating with the shaft 8 and carrying solenoids 17, 17<1> which extend along the greater length of the bars and lie partly or wholly within them. compression springs 23 between bars 9. 11, and sleeves 18, a drum 29 fixed to and rotating with the shaft 8 and carrying near its circumference a solenoid 31, 31<1> for each bar into which the projections 13 extend and also carrying for each bar 9, 11; two brushes, one connected to the solenoid 31, 31<1>, which imparts lengthwise movement to the bar, and the other connected to the solenoid 17, 17<1> which imparts radial movement to the bar. A stationary flange 26 carries commutator strips, Fig. 2, each concentric with the shaft and contacted by the brushes carried by the drum 29, brushes 28Z-W contacting, respectively, with strips 27Z-W, the numerals 0-18 on the respective strips, Fig. 2, representing the applied potentials.
