Abstract

649,533. Eddy-current brakes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 14, 1947, No. 27533. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1946. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Groups XIX and XXXV] The annular field winding of an inductortype eddy-current brake is cooled by fluid circulating in circumferential tubing disposed about the winding. In the eddy-current machine with unwound rotor and inductor stator, shown, the tubing embraces the winding at its sides 21 and its peripheral surface 22 which faces the air-gap, the coolant passing to and from the machine by flexible pipes 23, 24. Unwound machines may be additionally cooled by allowing cooling fluid to leave the tubing by spray openings 25 and pass into the air-gap 17, finally being drained off by tubing 30, 31 into a sump 32. Baffles 27 and 28 prevent whirling of the coolant in the end shields, and the field winding may be arranged on the inner or outer member as desired.
