Abstract
646,853. Eddy current brake. SOC. ELECTRO-MECANIQUE DE L'AVEYRON. Feb. 25, 1948, No. 5614. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1947. [Class 103 (i)] An eddy current brake of the type having a rotor with groups of electromagnets located on either side is provided with a cooling system that comprises two separate cooling fluid streams, one of which cools the rotor and the other the bearings. As shown in Fig. 3, air supplied from a single fan 21 enters the manifolds 23 and then divides into two streams. One stream passes through axial passages in the electromagnets 25, on to either side of the rotor 1 and out at ports 13a in the cylindrical casing of the brake. The other stream passes through ports 26 in the end-plates and is deflected by a partition 28 on to the ends of the shaft 2 and bearings 3 and escapes through ports 29. Modifications are described in which (a) the cooling stream enters the casing near the periphery of disc 1 dividing into two streams within the casing, and (b) the cooling stream for the bearings is entirely separate from that for the coils and rotor and passes through the brake axially. Relays may be used to connect the circuits to the motor for the cooling fan and the inductor windings to ensure safe operation of the brake.
