Abstract

[Also in Division F2] The rotor of a dynamo-electric machine is supported in the stator by gas pressure which acts as a gas bearing. As shown in Fig. 2, gas is fed into the air-gap 3 through radial passages 5 in the stator core, and leaves at the gap ends and through rotor ducts 8. As shown in Fig. 3, the stator bore may be improved by the use of a non-magnetic sleeve 13. Moreover, the gas may be used to cool the stator at ducts 14, and it may pass round the stator conductors in their slots (Fig. 4, not shown). As shown in Fig. 5, gas from stator duct 16C may pass into ducts 19 through which the rotor bars pass, these being located by lateral ribs 22 (Fig. 6, not shown). The spent gas escapes through radial holes 20 or axial holes 20a. If desired, the sleeve may be separated from the stator by a narrow air-gap, sealed where necessary by circumferential gaskets (Fig. 7, not shown). The same principle may be used to provide axial location of the rotor (Fig. 8, not shown).
