Abstract
649,351. Pistons. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. March 22, 1948, No. 8417. [Class 122(i)] A piston compriseing a head A, a ring carrying portion A<SP>2</SP> and a skirt A<SP>1</SP>, has a cooling chamber F containing a quantity of oil, formed between the ring portion A<SP>2</SP> and an inner part B secured to the head A and carrying a gudgeon pin C, the dimensions of the chamber F being such that the oil does not make appreciable contact with the underside of the piston head A. Oil is supplied to the chamber F through a connecting rod D a chamber H communicating with a port H<SP>1</SP> in the rod D, and a passage J' in the port B. The oil in the chamber F is shaken from end to end during reciprocation and is discharged from ports F<SP>1</SP>. Oil to cool the head A of the piston is supplied through a passage J, through radial passages G<SP>1</SP> and discharged from ports G<SP>3</SP> in an annular channel G<SP>2</SP>. A heat resistant plate E is fitted by the head A. In a modification the passages J<SP>1</SP> and the ports F<SP>1</SP> are omitted and the chamber F is partly filled with a heat transfer liquid or solid which becomes liquid at working temperatures. In a further modification the passages J, G<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>2</SP>, G<SP>5</SP> are omitted and ports F<SP>1</SP> are replaced by ports behind the centre ring groove whereby oil is ejected over the underside of the port B<SP>1</SP>.
