649,271. Beet-topping machines. ANDERSEN, H. C. Jan. 8, 1948, No. 575. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 1, 1948.] [Class 6(iii)] A beet-topping machine of the kind having a floating tracking wheel 18 preceding the topping knife 7 is characterized in that the wheel rotates on a horizontal lever 15 pivoted at its front end 16 on the main frame 1 and carrying at its rear end a bell-crank 23, one of the arms of which is spring-loaded to the main frame, and the other carries a jockey pulley 24 bearing on the chain drive 20 from a land wheel 2 to the tracking wheel. The topping knife 7 is carried by a resilient arm 26 secured to the frame and also connected by an adjustable rod 27 to the lever 15. The main frame 1 is forked at its front end and is supported on runners 3. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, also describes an arrangement where the bell-crank is omitted, the tracking wheel and knife-arm being directly interconnected and pivoted to the main frame, a spring-support being provided to maintain the floating action. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
