Abstract

649,210. Feeding sheets. STRACHAN & HENSHAW, Ltd., and WILLS, S. C. F. Sept. 2, 1948, No. 23190. [Class 100 (i)] Paper bags and other sheets are fed to packing &c. machines from a pile 18 contained in a magazine formed of a bottom 14, end-plate 15, and a side-plate 13 mounted on a vertical pin 16 and moved towards a side-plate 12 by a spring 17. The bags are placed on edge with their folded edges outwards fan-shaped, and means are provided for gripping the end bag of the pack and drawing it laterally from the hopper. This means comprises a suction head 19 mounted for oscillatory movement about a horizontal axis 20 in a plane parallel to the side 12. The suction head is formed with a pair of suction-boxes 21 which engage the corner edges of the front bag of the pile, and then are rotated so as to bend back these edges in the form of ears, and the corner edges of the bag below the one engaged by the boxes 21 are engaged by clamp members 36 mounted on a vertical shaft 37. As the bag is being withdrawn by oscillation of the switch head 19, a separating blade 39 is depressed between the bag being fed and the next one to prevent double feed, and during the withdrawal of the bag it is supported by a plate 38 secured to the head 19 and arranged adjacent to the hopper plate 12. In a modification, Fig. 7, a fixed suction-box 43 is mounted on the suction head, and a pivoted suction-box 44 is used to withdraw a portion of the foremost bag by pivoted action and another suction-box 46 engages the sheet next to that withdrawn by the box 44 and acts to clamp the sheets while the box 43 laterally withdraws the endmost sheet after the suction in block 44 is released.
