Abstract

1351181 Packaging bags; delivering and feeding sheets UNION CARBIDE CORP 19 April 1971 [20 April 1970] 9966/71 Headings B8C and B8R A machine for loading a stack of flat flexible bags into a carton comprises a stacker 16, at the outlet 14 of a bag making machine, for collecting a predetermined number of bags in an aligned stack, a stack carrier 23 for conveying the stack firstly to a position beneath a stiffening member dispensing station 26 where a cardboard stiffener is deposited on the stack and secondly to a stuffing station 59 where the stack is folded over and stuffed into a waiting carton 71 by vertically reciprocable ram 60. Stacking station.-The stacker 16 comprises a pivotally mounted end wall 17 arranged to be vibrated to align the stack and a pivotally mounted bottom closure member 18 arranged to deposit the completed stack in the stack carrier 23. The stack carrier.-The stack carrier is slidably mounted on a longitudinal guide rail 21 (a) and is connected to a drive chain 12 for reciprocating movement. Folding arms 50, Fig. 13, attached to the carrier serve to double-over the stack as cam follower roller 48 engages cam track 47. A discharge opening 54 is formed in the bottom of the carrier by guide plates 55. The stiffening member dispensing station.- This comprises a container 27 and a pivotally mounted suction cup 30 arranged to grip the bottom card of the pile 28 and move on a carriage 33, Fig. 7, to deposit the card on the stack in the carrier 23. The two extreme positions of the carriage and suction cup are shown in full and dotted lines, Fig. 7. The stuffing station.-Empty cartons 71 are moved from a conveyer 69 into a dispensing shoot 72 from where they drop on to a reciprocable shuttle plate 76, Fig. 16, mounted on guide bars 82 for movement from a position beneath the shoot to a position beneath the aperture 54 in the stack carrier 23 when the latter is at the stuffing station. Vertical downward movement of ram 60 bends the stack into the waiting carton 71 (Fig. 19, not shown). A number of machines of the above type may be mounted side-by-side for operation in unison.
