A machine for setting up bags of the kind having a single fold at each side comprises means to extract a flat bag from a magazine and open it and means to deposit it in holders on an endless conveyer, the holders comprising angled plates engaging the bag at the folds. Bags 80 are removed from a stack by suction cups 97 and brought within range of nozzles 234 which open them with an air blast, a moveable gate 307, Fig. 3, limiting expansion. A jet from a nozzle 238 blows each bag downwards through a guide shoot 50 and into pockets formed by holders 44 projecting from conveyer chains 17, 18. The bag bottom rests on a plate 15 and depresses a feeler 222. The feeler operates a switch which initiates a new machine cycle involving the indexing of the conveyer one step, opening of doors 55 at one side of the shoot to enable the upper part of the bag to pass out, Fig. 2, and feeding of the next bag from the magazine. Filling is accomplished manually or by known means G. which may be as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,548,222. The table 15 may vibrate to settle the bag contents.
