Abstract

1,125,856. Bag-opening apparatus. OLINKRAFT Inc. 17 March, 1967 [22 March, 1966], No. 12712/67. Heading B8C. A bag-opening apparatus comprises means 30 for holding bags 20 in a closed, stacked relationship; means 40, 41 (e.g. suction grippers) arranged adjacent the exit of the means 30 for engaging the exterior of each bag in turn, ejecting it through the exit and partly opening it; and a blower having a fixed discharge nozzle 61 adjacent to the exit for directing a stream of air into each successive partly-open bag, each bag being opened without nozzle 61 entering its interior. As described, bags 20 are stacked in a magazine 30. The outermost bag is held at its bottom by pins 35 and at its top a flange 36 engages its rear portion only through a thumb notch 21 in the top edge of its front portion. Suction grippers 40, 41 by virtue of their reciprocable motion engage the outermost bag, removing it from the stack and partly distending it. A cam 68 which moves together with grippers 40, 41 engages a roller 70 and thus causes a gate 63 to open, allowing a blast of air from nozzle 61 further and completely to distend the bag. The expanded bag is carried by the grippers 40, 41 over a pocket 81 of a conveyer 80, into which it is dropped. Instead of suction grippers, suitable fingers (not detailed) may be used. The expanded bags may be filled by hand or by mechanical means not described.
