Abstract

A machine for packaging a group of articles, e.g. cans, in a bag has a magazine with shelves for holding the articles, and means for pushing the articles simultaneously from the magazine into the bag. The bag is received on a table which swings in a vertical plane after the bag has been filled, and a device is also provided for opening and supporting the bag by gripping the bag walls and inserting guide plates. Cans 5 are discharged from an elevator, Fig. 1 (not shown), into grooves 6, Figs. 2 and 3, arranged one above the other and inclined to the horizontal. The cams roll down into the magazine 40 and rest on shelves 41. When the leading cans strike an abutment 44, Fig. 3, clamping-pistons 80 are actuated and grip those cans in the lowest positions in the grooves 6. An hydraulic device 39 is now actuated to move the magazine a short distance away from the inlet grooves to a position where a reciprocating device 45, Fig. 4, can push the cans from the magazine by means of rods 46. A bag has previously been positioned with the opening ends of its walls held respectively between plate 54 and piston 55, and between plate 58 and piston 59. Initially, the parts 58, 59 are adjacent the parts 54, 55 as shown in broken lines in Fig. 4, and then a piston 62 is retracted, pulling the parts 58, 59 downwards to the position shown in Fig. 4 in solid lines, and so opening the bag. Air from a jet (85), Fig. 9 (not shown), may be directed into the bag to facilitate its opening. As the cans are expelled from the magazine into the bag, flaps 77, Fig. 3, are swung open by the cans and move outwardly against the side walls of the bag, forming a guide for the insertion of the cans. The bag is supported by a flap 73, Fig. 2, and rests on a table 65, Fig. 4, which has two perpendicular parts 68, 69. When the bag has been filled, the table swings down about an axis 64, so that the bag is now resting on its bottom portion on the table part 69, which has an aperture 71, Fig. 3, through which driven rollers (72), Fig. 1 (not shown), protrude to move the bag away to a closing and sealing station (not detailed).
