1482987 Packaging rod shaped articles; discharging hoppers A KASTNER 7 Aug 1974 [16 Nov 1973] 34904/74 Headings B8C and B8S An apparatus for packaging articles, such as cigarette filter tubes, drinking straws and pencils, comprises a hopper for the articles, a horizontally reciprocal transfer member 62 which has a retention surface 65 for closing the bottom of the hopper when the member 62 is in a first position and a recess for receiving a quantity of the articles when the member 62 is in a second position, a support plate 84 which is mounted within the recess for horizontal movement with the transfer member 62 and is movable between an upper position in which it closes the bottom of the hopper and a lower position in which it permits articles to fill the recess when the member 62 is in said second position, and a horizontally reciprocable displacement plate (112) Fig. 8 (not shown) for pushing the articles from the recess into a box. The support plate 84 is part of an elevator member 82 slidably mounted within a channel member 86 which is vertically reciprocal by piston and cylinder assemblies 90, 92. A free edge portion of a separator plate (96) Fig. 6 (not shown) projects into the hopper below a hopper side wall 22 to prevent crushing of the articles during movement of the transfer member 62 to its first position. The hopper is maintained in a full condition by magazine assemblies (38) Fig. 17 (not shown) which are successively conveyed to a position above the hopper. Inclined side walls 22, 24 of the hopper can be vibrated. The articles are guided during their insertion into the box by a rectangular frame (105) Fig. 8 (not shown) having inclined internal surfaces. In operation the boxes are intermittently moved on a chain conveyer 4 from a station (A) Fig. 1 (not shown), where they are erected from blanks, past the hopper station (B) Fig. 1 (not shown), where they are filled, through a station (C) Fig. 1A (not shown) where the filled boxes are closed and sealed, and to a station (D) Fig. 1A (not shown) where the boxes are pushed from the conveyer 4.
